Bondage for Beginners: Building Your First Kit

Buy in this order: wrist cuffs, blindfold, ankle cuffs, an anchor point, then a hood or gag. Add safety shears at the same time as the first purchase, not later. Cuffs should be snug enough not to slide over the hand and loose enough to slip a finger underneath. Fast release matters more in a restraint than strong hold does, which is the entire argument for buckle-free designs.
What should you buy first?
Wrist cuffs. They are the easiest to put on correctly, the easiest to get out of fast, and they teach you what a safe fit feels like before you add anything else. A blindfold is the natural second purchase because it changes the headspace more than any other single item and carries almost no risk.
Why buckle-free?
Buckles have fixed holes, which means a fit that is either slightly loose or slightly tight, and they are slow in both directions. Ultra-grip velcro is infinitely adjustable and releases in one motion. In a restraint, that release speed is worth more than raw strength. Every Fort Troff cuff line uses it, and they all share the same reinforced D-rings, so pieces bought months apart still clip together.
Leather, neoprene or tactical velcro?
| Line | Tactical Velcro | FT Leather | Neo Neoprene |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Fast, no marks | Traditional smell and look | Soft, light |
| Sweat | Handles it | Needs care | Shrugs it off |
| Care | Wipe and air dry | Wipe, condition, never soak | Mild soap, air dry |
| Best for | Fast lockdown | Scenes with a look | Long sessions |
How tight should cuffs be?
Snug enough that the cuff does not slide over the hand or foot, loose enough to slip a finger underneath. Check circulation regularly. Cold hands, tingling, numbness or a color change all mean loosen now. Double-layered neoprene lining helps because it molds to the limb and spreads pressure rather than concentrating it on an edge.
What anchors the scene?
Cuffs hold a limb. An anchor decides where that limb goes. An under-bed system puts molded corners beneath the mattress with the straps above it, so a queen or king bed becomes a tie-down station with 4 anchor points, and it disappears the moment the straps come off. A hogtie centers all 4 limbs on one point. Both clip to any D-ring cuff.
Rope or tape instead?
Rope rewards practice. Tape works the first time you pick it up. Soft 6mm polyester rope at 30 feet covers most single-partner ties. Bondage tape sticks only to itself, so nothing pulls hair and no adhesive touches skin. Never use duct tape or packing tape on a person.
The safety rules that are not optional
- Safety shears within arm's reach of every scene.
- A safeword, plus a non-verbal signal for when the mouth is occupied. A safeword he cannot say is not a safeword.
- Circulation checks throughout.
- Nothing across the front of the neck, ever.
- Never leave a restrained partner alone.
- Never restrain someone who is impaired.
