Sex Toy Materials and Lube Compatibility
Share
Water-based lube is safe on every material Fort Troff sells. Silicone lube lasts longer and works in water, but it degrades silicone, TPE and TPR over time, which is exactly what turns a soft realistic surface sticky and cracked. Hybrids sit in between: they carry silicone content, so they follow the silicone rule, not the water rule.
Quick compatibility table
| Material | Water-based | Hybrid or silicone lube | Cleaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum silicone | Yes | No | Mild soap and warm water |
| TPE and TPR | Yes | No | Wash, dry fully, renewal powder |
| Metal | Yes | Yes on bare metal | Mild soap and warm water |
| PVC and vinyl | Yes | Check the product | Wipe clean or machine wash |
One catch on metal: Fort Troff spring plugs are silicone-coated, so they follow the silicone rule, not the metal rule.
Where does Grunt Load fit?
Grunt Load is a hybrid, not a pure water-based glide. It is built to give you the slickness and durability of silicone with the easy cleanup of a water-based lube, and it is condom safe. That combination is why it feels the way it does, and it is the reason to keep it off silicone and TPE toys. Use it on skin, on metal, and with condoms. Reach for a pure water-based lube when a silicone or TPE toy is involved.
Why is water-based the default?
It is safe across silicone, TPE, TPR, metal and glass, it rinses off clean, and it will not degrade anything. The one downside is that it dries out faster, so you reapply. That is a smaller cost than replacing a toy.
What is the difference between silicone and TPE?
Platinum silicone is non-porous, holds shape, takes heat and lasts the longest. TPE and TPR are softer and stretchier, which is exactly why fisting gear and strokers use them, and that softness comes with a more porous surface. That means TPE and TPR need more careful drying, water-based lube without exception, and separate storage.
Why do realistic toys go sticky?
TPE and TPR surfaces go tacky as they dry after washing. That is normal, not a defect. A light dust of renewal powder once the toy is clean and completely dry restores the soft, skin-like surface, stops lint sticking and keeps toys from sticking to each other in a drawer. Apply it after drying, never before.
How should you clean and store toys?
- Clean before and after every use, including toys only you have used.
- Purpose-made toy cleaner is safe across every material at once and rinses residue-free. Mild soap and warm water covers non-porous silicone and metal.
- No household cleaners, alcohol or bleach.
- Dry fully. Trapped moisture is what causes problems.
- Store cool, dark and separate. Different materials react when they sit against each other, which is how 2 good toys ruin each other. A cloth bag per toy is the simplest fix.
